Conclusion  and Results ...

 

Observation findings:

-Lots of laughter and teasing

-Positive reinforcement apparent

-High intensity

-Shirts say "urgency" on the back

-Team seems unified

-Lots of support and encouragement/positive talk

-Norm: stop dribbling when coach is talking

-Hierarchy is not apparent

-Rule: punishment for the team with the least amount of baskets (punishment/reward system)

 

Tools/resources:

-Clapping - signifies bringing it in or quieting down 

-Whistle - signifies change in activity/brings attention to coach/brings team together

-Coach/assistant coaches - making sure team is focusing on the play

-Scoreboard - to keep time 

-Cones - for exercises 

-Water? - did not use

-Player experience/ability - was present

-Player communication - was present

-Body language - was present

-Music- keep the momentum going

 

Interview Findings

- All players answered the questions very similarly. 

 

1. Does everyone get along? 4/4 players answered yes and were confident that everyone on the team would answer the same. They spend a lot of time together outside of team-related activities – hang out on weekends, etc.

2. What are the team’s ethics? Mostly interdependence and pride. All players had similar words/descriptions.

3. Does the team have a set of cultural values? Yes, they function as a unit. They intensely strive for the same goal – to win games.  Each have mutual respect and the golden rule is honored.

4. Is there a hierarchy on the team? If so, what is it? 4/4 said no – they have leaders, but not a hierarchy.

5. How do you view relationships between team members? 4/4 said very positive and encouraging.

6. If you could describe your team culture in one word, what would it be? “Togetherness”, “Pride”, “Family”

 

Things that may have corrupted the interview:

-The team didnt want to make themselves or their team look bad ..

-They responded with more positivity than the truth

 

Through observation and application of Structuration Theory, interviews and Narrative Analysis and participant observation, we found that the perceived culture of the IPFW men's basketball team matches the observed culture.
